Depart 0930 and travel west, past Stirling Castle
and Doune Castle, stopping in Callander for refreshments.
After a 30 minute break here, we cross into the
Highlands and along Loch Luibnaig, Loch Earn and
through Glen Ogle and Glen Dochart. We turn west
at Tyndrum through Glen Lochy to Dalmally. Under
the shadow of Ben Cruachan, we stop at the Glenorchy
Lodge Hotel for lunch. We then continue a short
distance west to Scotland's longest loch, Loch
Awe and take a walk out to the spectacular ruins
of Kilchurn Castle, set right at the head of the
Loch. This castle was a stronghold of the Clan
Campbell and the views are stunning in all directions.
After about 45 minutes here, we turn south to
Inveraray, an 18th century whitewashed village
set on the shores of sea Loch Fyne. The Adam brothers
who designed the town were also the architects
responsible for Edinburgh's New Town. Here you
can visit Inveraray Castle, the home of the Duke
of Argyll, chief of the Clan Campbell. The castle
is of neo-Gothic style, set in it's own grounds
with views over the Loch. There are many other
attractions here to visit such as the 19th century
jail, museum ship and the Bell Tower. You can
be dropped off in the town if you prefer.
We depart Inveraray after an hour and head south
along Loch Fyne. This sea loch is renowned for
it's fine seafood and you will see the oyster
beds, salmon and trout farms along the way. We
drive down the Rest and be Thankful, named by
the soldiers who built the original road in the
18th century. As you look down this pass, you
will see it was very aptly named! We travel round
another sea loch, Loch Long with it's history
of Viking raiders and wind our way down to Loch
Lomond, stopping at Luss, set on the "bonny,
bonny banks". Luss is a charming wee conservation
village with traditional estate workers cottages
lining the road. You can take a stroll down to
the Loch with fantastic views over to Ben Lomond.
At 17.30, we make our way back to Edinburgh stopping
for photos underneath Stirling Castle. Return
approx 19.30.
